From Evaluations to Upgrades,
Here Are Fortress Desktop FAQs
Evaluating Fortress Desktop
Q: Is the evaluation software limited in any way?
A: Yes. It is a thirty day, time limited evaluation that can protect an unlimited number of clients during that evaluation period. Dorian Software recommends that you install to only a select few clients during evaluation - when you purchase, you will therefore have fewer instances of evaluation software to uninstall before loading the full version.
Q: Is Fortress Desktop really just a screen saver package?
A: No. All protected users really ever see is its screen saver, so some might think that. Because Fortress leaves virtually no footprint, and because configurable settings are conveniently arranged then hidden until called upon by the administrator, one would hardly think anything beyond a screen saver is there. But seeing only the screen saver is much like seeing only the castle wall - there is a great deal going on behind that wall to secure the user's machine:
- Robust enforcement of logon / logoff times, again going beyond anything configurable in Active Directory or User Management for Domains.
- The ability to quickly secure Fortress Desktop clients remotely: A Windows domain administrator can forcibly log off a user remotely, start a password-protected screen saver on a remote workstation, view workstation and logon session information, and update Fortress Desktop policies on the fly.
- Restriction of logons by non-domain users that exist in a local workstation's user account database.
- Fortress Desktop merely needs to be configured to actively enforce policy that a password-protected screen saver must be used.
- Enables broader, more consistent session management policies while providing flexibility to manage subset groups differently.
- FortLock - a companion utility - lets users quickly lock their workstation or logoff with a simple desktop button click, task bar icon click, or press of a hotkey. This capability encourages and empowers end users to adopt good security practices - cutting down on your future headaches.
- User activity and idle time tracking capability with data conveniently directed to the Windows Event Log.
Purchasing Fortress Desktop
Q: I have 38 user accounts on workstations
that need to be secured. How do I purchase Fortress Desktop licenses?
A: Fortress Desktop licensing is based on the licensing block that includes the total or average number of users in your domain. In this case, the 50 block would be the appropriate choice and would give you flexibility for fluctuation in active domain user accounts or additional future users.
